delonghi ec155delonghi ec155 – Should You Buy?

The delonghi ec155 is a home espresso machine at a budget price – but does the coffee make the taste grade, and is it going to break a week after you get it?

I’ve been a coffee lover for years and love nothing more than a really good strong shot of rich black espresso. The cost is something else though, and recently I decided to look into cutting the cost of my starbucks coffee habit and see if I couldn’t do some home brewing.

Generally these machines cost a whole bunch of cash (pump machines can cost from $200 upwards) , so you’d be hard pressed to justify a home machine. That’s why when we found the delonghi ec155 we were a bit concerned whether the quality would be good enough to produce great coffee consistently, after all it comes in at a huge saving – at the time of writing, you can find it for $80.

The headline features for the delonghi ec155:

Unusually for a budget machine, the delonghi ec155 is pump driven. This is a feature normally only found on more expensive models – a good start!

Why is a pump driven machine better? well a pump driven machine produces better coffee because higher pressure can be achieved (typically 5 times greater pressure from a pump driven machine than a steam driven one).

This makes for far better flavour. Also pump driven machines are the only type capable of producing the “crema” foam of an authentic cup of espresso.

The ec155 is fitted with two separate thermostats – this means you can make great espresso or capuccino, each at a perfect temperature.

With self priming operation and a good size 35 ounce water tank (will make approx 10 shots before it needs to be re-filled), the delonghi ec155 is great value, plus it is relatively hassle free to clean due to the water tank and drip tray being easily detachable.

Additional features include adjustable steam emission swivel jet frother and a dual purpose filter unit which will accommodfate either ground espresso or standard E.S.E. pods. The ability to use E.S.E. pods makes it super convenient, as it avoids the need for grinding and tamping if you don’t have time or inclination for such things.

As delonghi is a household brand you are pretty sure of a good after sales service as well, and the ec155 comes with a full one year warranty.

One of many interesting customer reviews I discovered concerned a couple of coffee addicts who carried out a cost / benefit analysis and realised just how much they would save.
